At Ghost Democracy, we believe that clean skincare, and the confidence it brings, should be accessible to everyone.  Clean skincare shouldn’t be crazy expensive, it should be affordable – and it can be, when you cut out the middlemen and focus on people, not profits.

Our philosophy is based around three guiding principles:

A higher standard of clean skincare

Clean skincare should be the norm of the future, and we want to lead the movement by setting a high bar.  We go beyond paraben-free, phthalate-free, sulfate-free, and dye-free, etc… and formulate to be cleaner without:

• Fragrance: synthetic fragrances can be irritating and sensitizing to skin (many are also secretly stabilized with phthalates) so we prefer not to add any fragrance in order to minimize any unnecessary inflammation to the skin.
• Essential oils: great for aromatherapy, but many are irritants and allergens which can disrupt skin’s natural moisture barrier.
• Drying alcohols: great for the perception of ”quick absorption”, but these simple alcohols are volatile and can dry the skin, providing no long-term benefit.  We prefer to formulate with skin-protecting good fatty alcohols.
• Polyethylene glycol: great for thickening formulas, but these PEG compounds are contaminated with a byproduct known as 1,4-Dioxane which is a carcinogenic impurity that also causes irritation
• Silicones (and most difficult to formulate without!): these synthetic polymers give a nice smoothing, velvety feeling as it fills in pores and wrinkles for a “smoother complexion”.  However, this is just temporary and can potentially clog pores in higher concentrations. We prefer to replace the traditionally high % inclusion of silicones in certain products with ingredients that truly help improve the quality of the skin.

The U.S. has only banned 30 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products, where the European Union has banned almost 1,400.  In addition to those chemicals, click here for a comprehensive list of all the chemicals & ingredients we exclude in order to create cleaner, safer, less irritating skincare.  

Also, all our products are vegan, cruelty-free and skin-friendly pH levels are ensured for optimal compatibility (between 4.5 and 6.0).

Less chemicals = more active ingredients

Clean skincare should also be effective: we include a remarkably high % of ingredients in each formula and pair them with high levels of uncommon natural extracts to enhance key skin benefits.  This may increase our cost of goods, but it’s the right thing to do for clean skincare that actually works.

Accessible to everyone

By being direct-to-consumer, Ghost Democracy has no retail profit markups or extravagant marketing and passes these savings on to you.  We believe that quality, effective, clean skincare should be reasonably priced for a world where everyone feels confident in their skin.
